Born and raised in El Salvador, Sonia arrived in the United States on Christmas Day in 2001, determined to build a better life for her family. She worked minimum-wage jobs while taking English classes at night, supporting her mother and sisters through perseverance and grit.</p><p>In 2010, Sonia and her then-active-duty military family made Manassas their home, drawn by the city’s sense of community and affordable housing. As a proud mother of two children attending Manassas City Public Schools, Sonia understands firsthand the hopes and challenges facing local families.</p><p>Education has always been a cornerstone of Sonia’s story. She earned her Associate of Science degree in Business Administration from Northern Virginia Community College and her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the National Labor College. Sonia’s commitment to lifelong learning continues to shape her vision for Manassas.</p><p>Sonia’s career is defined by her unwavering advocacy for workers, women, immigrants, and human rights. She has spent nearly two decades with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), rising from a member to become the first Latina elected as a local business manager in the union’s 120-year history—a groundbreaking achievement that opened doors for others. She currently serves as a National Board Member on the LIUNA Latino Caucus and the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), and is an elected board member of the Northern Virginia Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.</p><p>In January 2023, Sonia made history as the first Latina elected to the Manassas City Council, bringing a much-needed perspective to a city where over a third of residents are Latino. Her priorities reflect her deep roots in the community: building a more inclusive government, strengthening public education, investing in reliable transportation, and ensuring that every resident has a voice at City Hall.</p><p>Sonia’s leadership is grounded in compassion, resilience, and a relentless drive to uplift those around her. Whether advocating for fair wages, championing women’s health, or expanding opportunities for youth, Sonia is committed to delivering positive change for Manassas.</p><p>When Sonia speaks, it is as a neighbor, a mother, and a tireless advocate who knows the value of hard work and the power of community. <h4>1. Advocate for Local government accessibility (ASL)&nbsp;</h4><p>Advocate to ensure our government is accessible to all. I'll work with the General Assembly to advocate for a grant program that allows local governments to facilitate ASL interpreters during official meetings.</p><h4>2. Advocate for increased Government Transparency.</h4><p>Advocate for transparency and accountability by fighting to reform the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). I will work with the General Assembly to limit excessive fees charged for public records requests, ensure residents can access government information at a low-cost, and protect the public’s right to know how decisions are being made in their government.</p><h4>3. Ensure our government can support our students.</h4><p>Advocate to ensure our local governments receive the funding they need to support our students. I'll work with the General Assembly to establish a grant program that allows local governments to facilitate internship programs, ensuring our students can learn from our local leaders!</p>

These improvements will encourage walking and cycling, reduce vehicle traffic, and promote healthier lifestyles while ensuring safety for all users.</p><h4>2. Create Workers’ Focus Transportation</h4><p>Advocate for public transportation that meets the needs of workers in Manassas! I'll work with the General Assembly to create and expand buses from Haymarket to Innovation Park, allowing workers to easily get to and from their jobs.</p><h4>3. <strong>Require Accessible Transportation</strong></h4><p>Advocate for increased accessibility for public transportation. I'll work with VDOT to advocate for policies that ensures all residents can safely, easily, and accessibly use public transportation.</p>
